What is a domain name

A domain name is simply an address on the internet, something like www.ezylearn.com.au

A domain name is just a name however and it needs to be directed or "pointed" to a website server for you to take advantage of all the website tools available.

Website domain names are different in each country, but you can register a domain name in most countries even if you don't live there.

There are many Australian companies that have website domain names that end in .com, for example 123ezy websites have a website domain name of 123ezy.com but they are an Australian business (actually a division of EzyLearn Pty Ltd).

Domain names can be transferred

If you have a domain name, but didn't register it yourself you may think that you are tied to the person who designed your website (your website designer), but this is not the case.

It is relatively simple to transfer a domain name and you can do it at any time.

For example, Melbourne IT is one of the biggest domain name registrars in Australia and they were the first to offer australian domain names. When they first started operating, it was harder to buy a domain name than it is today. You had to provide a registered business name and state the nature of your reason for purchasing a domain name.

Since then, many more companies have started to provide domain name registration services and the price for a domain name has become quite cheap. They have come down from approximately $130 for 2 years to much cheaper levels of around $45 for 2 years.

Most people don't change

Most people however stay with their original registrar because they think it is too hard to change. They also think that their website will be effected if they change domain name registrars.

It is important to know that transferring a domain name is simple and that it is the website hosting that is more important because that is where you website files are actually stored.

Some domain name registrars also provide website hosting services but even if you register for web hosting with these companies you can still transfer your domain name elsewhere and use their hosting services.

More important than a domain name

Your domain name is very important as far as recognition is concerned, but when it comes to what you actually want do with your domain name, then it is your web site hosting that offers all the internet website design, optimisation, statistics and keyword tools.

How it works

Here a list of steps that you can take to start from scratch and end up with a website presence:

Choose your domain name (eg. 123ezy.com) and the email address(es) that you would like to have at your domain name, eg. steve@123ezy.com and then complete a 123ezy website hosting application form.

Website Menus:
Write some information about each service or product you provide. Think about the name that you would like to give to each of the pages. It is best to write this in a Microsoft Word document.

Free website design training:
EzyLearn provides you with free online videos on how to use the 123ezy website builder.

Go through each of the videos so that you have a good idea of what you can actually do with your new website design tools.

You'll find that the website builder is almost like using a word processor.

Speak to your website designer:
Included in the cost of your website is 3 hours of website design consulting by an experienced website designer.

Organise a time to meet this person and provide them with the information and images that you would like to have on your website.

You'll receive some one to one training and guidance for future steps to take in the development of your internet marketing.

Receive more training:
There are more free online website design training videos that you can watch to give you ideas on other tools available to you.

Images and animations:
You may feel that you'd like a professional website designer to finish your website or add fancy, flashy components to your website.

Keywords and keyphrases:
Once you have the look and feel of your website the way you like, it is a good idea to have each web page optimised for search engines.

This process involves working out all the keywords or phrases that you believe your prospective clients will use to search for you.

Get into Search engines:
Unfortunately this doesn't always happen automatically so you'll need to get to know the major search engines and website directories and verify your website with them and make sure that you have a site map for them to follow.

Keeping people at your website:
A good website designer can provide you with tools like email newsletters, forums, blogs, livehelp, refer to a friend and many more scripts that provide your website visitors with useful tools that will keep them on your website and coming back for more.
